Be Lord of My Life

I Corinthians 8:4-6

“Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.”

Paul is writing to the church in Corinth regarding the issue of eating meats offers to idols. We won’t get into the whole reason of why he was writing about this right now…I’ll save that for another day. What I would like to focus on is the fact that non-believers in the city of Corinth had many gods and many lords. Believers have one Lord, and that is Jesus Christ.

“Lord” in this verse is translated from the Greek word “kyrios.” In Hebrew, the language in which the Old Testament was written, this same word is “Adonai.” Adonai is a name of God meaning, “Lord and master,” as in a master to slaves.

When you first became a believer, you most likely made a declaration that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior. Honestly, I think it’s pretty easy to accept Jesus as our Savior. As our Savior, He keeps us from hell, heals us, delivers us, all the good things. But, have you really made him Lord of your life? Are you a slave to His will and His purposes? Have you surrendered everything to Him? Or are you living like the world with many gods and many lords? Is your job your lord? Is your spouse or your children your lord? Has your pride or your identity, who you are in yourself become your lord? Are you your own lord?

A slave owns nothing. They are literally at the mercy of their master. The master says go here, the slave goes. The master says do this job, the slave obeys. The will of the slave becomes the will of the master. Who is your master?

Lord, Adonai, I surrender myself, my will, my pride, my self-sufficiency, the need to be in control to You today. I trust You with my life. Let Your will be done in me. Teach me how to hear and obey Your voice. You are the potter and I am the clay. Mold me, make me, use me to accomplish Your will on Earth. I truly want You to be Lord of my life.
