Psalm 19:14
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”
Growing up, my mother always quoted the verse to us kids, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Any time we got into a fight and one of us called the other a name like butthead or stupid, she would give us a talking to about what was going on in our hearts that would cause a word like that to come out of our mouths. This engrained in me the significance of the heart/mouth connection.
What you’re meditating on regularly will come out in your interactions with others and the words you speak. Pay attention to your words today. What do they sound like? Anger, depression, negativity, joy, peace, worry, anxiety? If you’re hearing words that are not pleasing to God, it’s time to get your heart right. Spend some time with Jesus today and His Word. Ask Him to search your heart.
Lord, I want my words to be a blessing to the hearer, edifying to their souls and always pointing to Your goodness. Let every word that comes from my lips be a reflection of the beauty and grace you have deposited in my heart through Your Word and Holy Spirit. Put a guard on my mouth and my heart against anything that is not pleasing to You.
