John 1:1-5, NLT

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible because it is talking about my favorite person, Jesus! I’m not going to spend any time making my own comments on this passage, but I will say one thing. Jesus is “the Word” that is referred to in the passage. So, I’m going to re-type this passage with the name Jesus in it instead of “the Word.” Watch how the eyes of your understanding open up when you read it like that!

In the beginning, Jesus already existed. Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God. Jesus existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Jesus, and nothing was created except through Jesus. Jesus gave life to everything that was created, and Jesus’ life brought light to everyone. The light of Jesus shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
