Fun Facts Found in Acts Chapter 1

Luke is the author of the book of Acts.

After Jesus’ resurrection, He was seen by His disciples and spoke to them about the kingdom of God for 40 days before His ascension.

Jesus commanded His disciples to wait on the Promise of the Father, which is the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus ascended into heaven at the Mount of Olives and Jesus will return at the Mount of Olives.

A Sabbath day’s journey is a distance of 2,000 cubits, or about 2/3 of a mile, that a Jew was permitted to travel on the Sabbath. The term is used in the Bible in Acts 1:12 to describe the distance from Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives, where Jesus led his disciples on the day of his ascension. The Sabbath day’s journey was a limit set by the rabbis to ensure that Jews did not break the law by working on the Sabbath, which included travel. The distance was derived from Joshua 3:4, which states that the distance between the ark and the people was 2,000 cubits. If a traveler came upon the Sabbath while on their journey, they could select a tree or stone wall as their residence for the Sabbath. They could then travel 2,000 paces to the selected tree or wall, and 2,000 paces beyond.

The disciples often met in the upper room of a house because it provided a private, secluded space for prayer, teaching, and fellowship, particularly during a time when they were facing persecution and needed a safe place to gather as a community.

Many of Jesus disciples, including women, Mary (the mother of Jesus), and Jesus’ brothers were in the upper room on the day of Pentecost. There were about 120 people assembled to wait on the Holy Spirit.

David prophesied of Judas’ betrayal of Jesus more than a thousand years before it happened. (Psalm 41:9, Psalm 69:25, Psalm 109:8)

The field where Judas killed himself was purchased with the 30 pieces of silver paid to Judas for his betrayal of Jesus. If you read further about this in Matthew 27:3-10, you’ll discover that the prophet Zechariah prophesied of this event long before it happened. (Zechariah 11:12-13) This old potter’s field became a burial ground for foreigners. Jeremiah also talked bout this potter’s field in Jeremiah 18. Remember how I say the Word ALWAYS confirms itself?

Mathias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot among the 12 original disciples. They prayed about it and cast lots to choose between him and a guy called Joseph Barsabas.
