The words in Colossians 4:6 stood out to me. Paul addresses our speech towards others, specifically unbelievers.
“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”
What does it mean for our speech to be “seasoned with salt?” I believe the salt in this scripture is the Word of God. The word “grace” in this verse is “charis,” which is translated from the Greek word, “gift.” I understand this to mean that our speech and our conversations should be peppered with the gift of God’s Word, the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Let’s look into the significance of salt for a moment. What are the purposes of salt and how can we apply this to this verse in Colossians 4 for further understanding?
- Salt is a preservative. What are we preserving when we speak? The gospel of Jesus Christ, His Word. In Isaiah 40, it also talks about the everlasting Word of God. It never fails or fades, even when society/culture attempts to make it null and void. We must speak the truth of God’s Word, especially in the face of a woke culture and false ideologies that contradict the Word of God.
- Salt is a flavoring. Add salt to any food and it brings out the best taste of that food. When we speak the truth of God into a person’s life, who God says they are and how He sees them, it brings out the best in them! Tell someone that are chosen, loved and redeemed by their Heavenly Father and watch their face transform!
- Salt has healing properties. Speaking the truth of God’s Word brings healing to minds, hearts, emotions and bodies. When our words contain Life, they bring freedom, restoration and healing to lives!
The words that we speak can build up or tear down. Let us join in the words of David in Psalm 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
