The following is an excerpt from Winnie Banov’s book, Love Notes :
The significance of the prefix ‘co-‘
The Greek word “συν” (sun) is often used as a prefix. In English, this word is translated “with”, but as a prefix, it is rendered “co-”. It expresses the closest possible union:
. . . . . 👉 Strong’s #G4862 Sun: A primary preposition denoting union, with or together (but much closer than #G3326 or #G3844) i.e. by association, companionship, process, resemblance, possession, instrumentality, addition, etc.:—beside, with. In composition it has similar applications, including completeness. 👈. . . . .
While there are many prefixes in the Greek language that express concepts of being near or next to, “sun” is the one that expresses the closest possible union. It is two becoming one. It allows us to see that what Christ did was not only for us, but with us. We have fully participated in His death, burial, and resurrection. We have been given union already.
This expression of union can be found all over the New Testament—co-crucified, co-buried, co-raised, co-seated, co-heir—so there should be no more tiptoeing around the truth. As a believer, we are in union with Him already. Believing this truth will expose and dismantle every false religious idea that keeps you at a distance from your Beloved. Instead of striving to find union with Him; He has already given it to you as a gift.
Wow!!! We are co-crucified, co-buried, co-raised, co-heirs, co-glorified and co-seated with Christ! Just think about that! Meditate on this today and then share with me what revelation you get from the Lord. My thoughts go to how we are to be the hands and feet of Jesus on this Earth and how He commissioned us to make disciples throughout the whole world. And if we are “co” all these things then that means we have everything we need in Him! We identify with Jesus through repentance, water baptism, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, His authority in us to cast out demons and lay hands on the sick to recover.
I have included several scriptures that use this phrase “sun” Christ.
Galatians 2:20
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
Romans 6:8
“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him”
Romans 8:16-17
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”
I Corinthians 13:4
“For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you.”
Colossians 2:11-13
“In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,”
Colossians 3:1-3
“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
